Ex-President Koroma Returns to Sierra Leone

Former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma will return home this weekend after state prosecutors dropped all treason charges against him, according to Vice President Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh.

Koroma, who governed from 2007 to 2018, departed for Nigeria in 2024 following allegations connecting him to a deadly November 2023 coup attempt.

Although judicial authorities originally granted him a three-month medical leave, he remained abroad for over two years until the Ministry of Justice dismissed the indictment without public explanation.

Vice President Jalloh announced the homecoming during a gathering in Makeni, describing the move as a step toward national cohesion ahead of the 2028 elections.

The initial 2023 uprising claimed 21 lives after armed attackers raided armouries, prisons, and military barracks, leading to lengthy prison sentences for two dozen soldiers.

Koroma briefly visited the country in July for an ECOWAS summit, but this move marks his permanent resettlement.
