American tennis player Frances Tiafoe staged a stunning comeback from two sets down to defeat 22-year-old compatriot Alex Michelsen 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (10/6) in a thrilling US Open quarter-final on Tuesday.
The 11th seed battled back from a 5-3 deficit in the third set and recovered from an early break in the decisive fifth set to secure his third semi-final appearance in Flushing Meadows over the past five years.
Tiafoe clinched the dramatic victory in a 10-point match tiebreaker after four hours and 38 minutes of intense play on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Michelsen initially dominated the match with aggressive play against an unusually passive Tiafoe, advancing toward his first Grand Slam semi-final without having dropped a set earlier in the tournament.
However, pressure mounting on Michelsen while serving for the match at 5-4 in the third set triggered key double faults that allowed Tiafoe to break back.
Capitalising on the momentum shift, Tiafoe reeled off seven consecutive games to claim the third set and swept through the fourth.
Despite losing his lead, Michelsen broke early in the final set to take a 3-0 advantage, but Tiafoe maintained his composure and clawed back to force the tiebreaker.
Following the final point, Tiafoe celebrated before consoling a weeping Michelsen at the net, acknowledging his opponent’s remarkable performance and tough defeat.
Tiafoe now advances to face either defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or eighth seed Ben Shelton for a spot in Sunday’s final.
