Former SABC Sport presenter and music-rights activist Owen Ndlovu was allegedly kidnapped in Katlehong, South Africa, on Tuesday night, prompting police to launch a manhunt for three suspects.
The incident happened at about 20:00 as Ndlovu went to pick up his wife, Portia, from a church service. According to police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, Portia was walking towards their vehicle when three unidentified men approached. One of the men was reportedly armed.
The suspects allegedly took the former reporter and drove away in his Ford Raptor.
“He was picked up by men with guns, and they took him away. I’m scared for him,” Portia Ndlovu said.
A case was opened at the Katlehong police station, but Ndlovu had still not been found by Wednesday morning.
Ford Raptor recovered, Ndlovu still missing
Police later recovered the Ford Raptor in Walkerville, south of Johannesburg. The vehicle had reportedly been abandoned and partially stripped.
Ndlovu is known to football audiences through his work with SABC Sport and PSL radio via Michaelowen Productions. He is also the founder of United Artists and a SAMRO member who has been involved in advocacy around music rights.
He was expected to appear at the Booysens Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday in connection with a music-rights dispute. His kidnapping occurred just hours before the scheduled court appearance.
Police have not indicated whether the incident is connected to the court matter, a separate hijacking, or a possible ransom-related kidnapping. Three suspects are being sought, but their identities and whereabouts have not been disclosed.
Police continue search for Ndlovu
Investigators are expected to examine available surveillance footage and other information that could help establish the movements of the vehicle after it left Katlehong.
Ndlovu has previously been the victim of vehicle-related crime. In 2018, a thief reportedly nearly ran him over while stealing a bakkie in Braamfontein.
This time, however, the incident has left his family waiting for his safe return.
