Manchester City shrugged off the looming threat of severe sanctions to defeat 10-man Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield, extending their flawless Premier League start under manager Enzo Maresca.

Second-half strikes from Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku, and Rayan Cherki secured a three-point lead at the top of the table.

The dominant performance followed an independent commission’s finding that City committed over 100 financial rule breaches between 2009 and 2018.

A hostile Anfield crowd greeted City with chants of “cheats” and signs mocking the scandal, but Liverpool failed to capitalise on the field.

The match shifted early in the second half after Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch received a second yellow card for tackling substitute Doku.

City exploited the numerical advantage 25 minutes in when Haaland slammed home a deflected Doku shot to break the deadlock.

Doku doubled the lead three minutes later with a brilliant curling shot into the top corner before Cherki combined with Josko Gvardiol to seal the 3-0 victory.

The defeat marked the first loss for new Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola, whose depleted squad struggled without several key injured starters.

Despite City’s on-field triumph, their title pursuit remains subject to potential points deductions or league expulsion depending on the outcome of their financial appeal.
