Belgium’s northern region of Flanders confirmed on Thursday that two individuals died after contracting the West Nile virus.
Local authorities reported a total of 14 confirmed cases across the region as the mosquito-borne illness continues to spread throughout Europe.
While health officials withheld specific personal details, they confirmed that both deceased individuals belonged to high-risk medical categories.

The infection typically manifests with flu-like symptoms, but severe cases can escalate to high fevers, tremors, comas, meningitis, and encephalitis—a potentially fatal brain inflammation.
Health authorities across the continent remain on high alert as the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control reported last week that more than 1,850 cases have emerged across 18 European nations this year.
