A church shooting in southern Jordan has claimed another life, raising the total death toll to eight following Friday’s terror attack, Health Minister Ibrahim al-Bdour confirmed Saturday.

Gunmen stormed a Greek Orthodox church compound in the village of Hammoud, located within the Karak governorate, opening fire during an active funeral procession.

Medical officials report that 26 additional victims remain hospitalised, with at least one patient in critical condition.

Jordanian officials immediately launched a nationwide manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators behind the violence.

“A terrorist group has carried out a horrific act, one that is condemned in every respect, and the security services are working round the clock to track them down,” declared Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya during a press conference.

Prime Minister Jafar Hassan ordered three days of national mourning, mandating that government facilities fly flags at half-mast to honour the victims.

King Abdullah II visited hospitalised survivors in Karak, issuing a stern warning to those responsible.

Writing on X, the monarch condemned the shooting as a terrorist attack and promised that those responsible “will be met with the harshest retaliation.”

The violence has shaken Karak, home to a significant portion of Jordan’s Christian population, which comprises roughly two to three per cent of the kingdom’s majority-Muslim society.
