Africa is witnessing a surge in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing, driving substantial investments into the continent’s digital infrastructure.
High-capacity hyperscale campuses are emerging as a critical asset class, with South Africa remaining the largest digital hub. Its mature data centre ecosystem is rapidly scaling to meet regional enterprise demand, highlighting the need for coordinated development between digital infrastructure and national energy networks.
This intersection of energy and technology will be a key focus at African Energy Week (AEW) 2026, particularly in the AI and Data Centre track, Renegade Intel. The platform will assess how the continent’s digital expansion depends on the transformation of power systems.
Historically, developers relied on private generation assets to ensure continuity and address electricity constraints. S&P Global Energy notes that while expanding generation is crucial, the full value of these investments hinges on strategic deployment into transmission infrastructure, which remains a priority for South Africa’s power sector.

Johannesburg continues to lead as Africa’s corporate node, with net leasable power expected to reach 440 MW by 2030. Cape Town is growing at a 28% CAGR, developing a 198-MW coastal hub with direct subsea cable connectivity. To sustain these hubs, developers are establishing power-wheeling pathways and utilising grid capacity in renewable-heavy regions, highlighting opportunities for public-private partnerships in constructing high-voltage transmission lines.
Corporate offtakers are securing long-term power through utility-scale purchase agreements. Digital Realty accounts for 85% of private clean energy procurement, while Vantage Data Centres is leveraging an 87-MW solar pipeline for its campuses.
“As Africa undergoes a massive digital transformation, we cannot build a world-class data and AI ecosystem without first securing a robust, high-voltage transmission grid to power it. AEW 2026 will directly bridge this gap, bringing together global capital and regulatory frameworks needed to turn these interconnected energy and infrastructure challenges into bankable projects, ” says NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber.
Renegade Intel will align institutional investors, developers, and policymakers to accelerate capital deployment into Africa’s expanding grid networks, ensuring digital growth is powered sustainably.
