Argentina’s football association (AFA) has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against sanctions FIFA imposed over incidents during the World Cup final against Spain.
According to AFP, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) announced the appeal on Saturday after FIFA’s appeals body rejected its complaint against the punishments handed to the association and midfielder Leandro Paredes.
Paredes received the harshest punishment, with a 10-match ban and a $90,000 fine for his role in clashes with Spanish players.
He grabbed Eric Garcia by the throat and wrestled Gavi to the ground while holding his substitute’s bib. The incidents escalated after Spain won the final 1-0 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19.

FIFA also fined the AFA $321,000 for breaches of its disciplinary code. The charges included using a sporting event to make non-sporting demonstrations, team misconduct, and discriminatory chants and gestures by Argentine supporters.
Other members of Argentina’s team also faced sanctions. They included Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada and Roberto Ayala, a member of the coaching staff.
However, FIFA’s appeals body reduced Molina’s punishment from a seven-match ban and $90,000 fine to a four-match ban and $60,000 fine.
The AFA said it would now take its appeals against the sanctions imposed on the association and Paredes to CAS.
