Suspected Boko Haram insurgents killed at least 10 soldiers and injured more than 20 others during a coordinated overnight assault on a military base in Borno State on Tuesday, according to security sources and residents.
The fighters overwhelmed troops in the Guzamala Local Government Area, destroyed military vehicles, and set fire to portions of the nearby village of Mairari.
In addition to the military casualties, the attackers killed at least five civilians and a forest guard.
Residents reported that the militants launched simultaneous raids across the district before hitting the army facility.
In the nearby lakeside village of Tumbun Barebari, fighters seized over 40 fishing vessels from local workers, though fishermen reported that the insurgents did not physically harm them.

Military spokesperson Captain Mohammed Goni did not immediately respond to requests for official comment.
The deadly assault highlights a recent surge in insurgent activity across northeastern Nigeria, where both Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) continue to mount attacks despite a 17-year government military counter-insurgency campaign.
While Nigerian forces successfully repelled an ISWAP attack in Borno last week—killing over 25 fighters—insurgent groups maintain significant operational capabilities across the region.
