Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has mourned four members of a family who died after a three-storey building collapsed in Ilorin.
Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly Yakubu Danladi-Salihu and Senator representing Kwara Central, Saliu Mustapha, also expressed condolences to the victims’ families and the affected community.
The building collapsed on Tuesday at No. 41 Popo Giwa Street, beside Gogoro Mosque, in the Popo Giwa/Abemi area of Ilorin West Local Government Area, trapping eight members of the same family under the rubble.
Four members of the family were rescued alive, while the other four died in the incident.
Reacting to the incident in a post on X( formerly Twitter) late Tuesday, AbdulRazaq said he was saddened by the tragedy and had visited the injured survivors to assess their condition.

The governor said the state government was providing medical treatment and other necessary support to the survivors to help them stabilise and recover from their injuries.
“I am saddened by the tragic collapse of a 3-storey building in Popo Giwa area of Ilorin, earlier today. My heart goes out to victims of the very sad incident. I have paid a get-well-visit to those injured during the building collapse,” the governor wrote.
“I wished them safe and quick recovery. Our government is giving them the necessary medical care and support to ensure they are stable and recover promptly,” he said.
He also disclosed that a government delegation led by the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Lawal Olohungbebe, had visited the scene to assess the situation and sympathise with members of the affected community.
AbdulRazaq commended officials of the Kwara State Emergency Management Agency, State Fire Service, Ilorin West Local Government and community volunteers for their coordinated rescue efforts.
He said the incident reinforced the need for strict adherence to construction safety standards and urged residents to cooperate with relevant authorities on building safety.
“I commend all our first responders from the State Emergency Management Agency to the State Fire Service, the Ilorin West Local Government authorities, and all our community volunteers for the coordinated rescue efforts,” the governor said.
“It is a reflection of our values as a people who solidarise with one another during moments of need and grief,” he added.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enforcing construction standards to protect residents and prevent avoidable tragedies.
“I ask Almighty Allaah to comfort families who are bereaved from the incident. Again, this is another pointer to the fact that we must take safety protocols seriously in construction,” AbdulRazaq said.
“Our administration is irrevocably committed to upholding standards always to keep our people safe. We appeal for your cooperation and support as citizens,” he added.
Meanwhile, Mustapha, in a statement issued by his Media Assistant, Nasif Sholagberu, described the incident as tragic and condoled with the victims’ families and residents of the affected community.
The senator also commended the emergency responders and called for stricter compliance with building regulations by property owners and developers.
He urged residents to report signs of structural weakness to the relevant authorities before they develop into life-threatening emergencies.
Also reacting, Danladi-Salihu, through a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Abdulkadir Yusuf, described the collapse as unfortunate and prayed for the speedy recovery of the survivors.
The Speaker also commended the state government and rescue teams for their swift response to the incident.
