A devastating landslide in Chongqing’s Pengshui County killed at least eight people and left 34 others missing on Friday morning.
The disaster struck a residential and commercial street at the bottom of a mountain around 9:10 am local time, sending terrified residents fleeing from massive clouds of dust.
Local authorities deployed more than 800 rescue workers to the site, who successfully pulled 18 trapped individuals from the debris, though medical staff later pronounced eight of them dead.
County leader Ren Xujiang confirmed that the search remains highly dangerous due to the region’s notoriously steep and unpredictable terrain.
Officials warned that unstable, hazardous rocks still cling to the sides of the cliff, threatening ongoing rescue operations.

To address the emergency, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Emergency Management quickly allocated 50 million yuan ($7.36 million) in natural disaster relief funds to support the affected families and secure the area.
Chinese President Xi Jinping demanded that local authorities swiftly investigate the root cause of the disaster and conduct comprehensive risk assessments to eliminate future geological hazards.
This tragedy occurred less than two weeks after another major landslide in northwestern Gansu province buried 33 people and claimed 21 lives.
