China and Tajikistan have signed a treaty to enhance cooperation and relations between the two Asian countries.

The treaty was signed on Tuesday during the Tajik President Emomali Rahmon’s state visit to China. This was revealed by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Mao Ning, in a post shared on X on Tuesday.

“President Xi held talks with Tajik President Rahmon. Steadfast mutual support is the defining feature of China-Tajikistan relations,” said Ning.

“The signing of the China-Tajikistan Treaty on Permanent Good-Neighbourliness, Friendship and Cooperation will fully demonstrate the high-level political mutual trust between the two countries and provide a solid underpinning for China-Tajikistan’s everlasting friendship.

“China stands ready to work with the Tajik side to build an even closer China-Tajikistan community with a shared future and deliver greater benefits to the people of the two countries.”

Tajikistan is a Central Asian country bordered by Afghanistan, China, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan.

China and Tajikistan have also signed more than 50 cooperation agreements worth over 8 billion US dollars. Rahmon said China and Tajikistan’s bilateral relations are scaling new historical heights.

The two countries maintain a close strategic relationship, with China being one of Tajikistan’s most important partners in trade, infrastructure, and security cooperation. Tajikistan is considered one of China’s more economically dependent partners in Central Asia.

Chinese President Xi Jinping had awarded Rahmon the “Friendship Medal” in 2024.
