Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar has died while in the custody of bandits, the Katsina State government announced on Saturday, describing the development as a tragic loss.

The former Director of Defence Information died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while being held captive by his abductors, according to a statement by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasiru Mu’azu.

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in bandits’ captivity,” Mu’azu said.

The retired military officer was abducted along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State, near Zakin Baure village.

The abductors had released a video on June 6 showing the couple in captivity, with the general’s wife conveying demands for their release.

“Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the state government and security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” Mu’azu said.

The commissioner described the general’s abduction and subsequent death as a monumental loss to his family, Katsina State and the entire country.

Governor Dikko Radda extended his condolences to the bereaved family and Nigerians at large.

The governor described the incident as a dark moment in the state’s fight against insecurity and a reminder of the need for collective action against banditry, Mu’azu said.

The commissioner reiterated the state government’s commitment to working with security agencies to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

He assured residents that the government’s resolve to combat banditry and guarantee the safety of lives and property remained unwavering.
