Nigeria defeated Zambia 1-0 at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) despite playing with 10 players for more than half of the match, keeping their title defence hopes alive.
The Super Falcons secured the crucial victory on Saturday in Rabat after forward Asisat Oshoala scored the only goal of the game in the eighth minute.
Oshoala raced past two Zambia defenders before goalkeeper Hazel Nali blocked her initial effort, but the rebound hit the Nigerian striker and rolled into the net.
Nigeria were forced to defend with a player less after 40 minutes when Blessing Demehin was shown a red card for a foul on Zambia’s star striker Barbra Banda.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, the defending champions held on to claim three important points and move level with Zambia on three points in Group C.
Malawi currently leads the group with six points after two matches, while Egypt remain without a point.
Nigeria, who are chasing a record-extending 11th WAFCON title, will face Egypt in their final group match on Wednesday, while Malawi take on Zambia in a southern African clash.
Earlier on Saturday, Malawi continued their impressive run with a 3-1 victory over Egypt.
Temwa Chawinga played a key role in the win, creating one goal and scoring another as Malawi followed up their shock victory over Nigeria with another strong performance.
Rose Kadzere opened the scoring in the 35th minute after converting Chawinga’s pass, before Faith Chinzimu doubled the lead just before half-time.
Chawinga added Malawi’s third goal in the 69th minute after beating Egypt goalkeeper Maha Shehata to the ball and heading into an empty net.
Egypt scored their first goal of the tournament through Eman Kassem in the 71st minute, but Malawi held on for another major victory.
The final round of Group C matches will determine which teams advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament in Morocco.
