Suspected armed bandits have abducted a retired Major General and former Director of Defence Information, Rabe Abubakar, along with his wife, in Katsina State, sources said on Saturday.

The incident occurred along the Katsina–Matazu road when the former senior military officer was travelling with his wife. Their vehicle was reportedly stopped by armed men in Matazu Local Government Area, after which they were taken to an unknown location.

The driver, who escaped the attack, sustained a bullet injury, according to sources.

The abduction has heightened worries about insecurity in the North-West, especially in Katsina State, where both locals and visitors are being affected by an increasing number of abductions and armed attacks.

Despite ongoing military operations against armed criminal groups, Nigeria continues to face security challenges, as demonstrated by the most recent attack.

The abduction comes amid a wave of kidnappings across the country, including recent mass abductions of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo and Borno states. The government has faced mounting criticism over its handling of the security crisis.
