Faye Confirms Senegalese Football Fans’ Release

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has announced that Senegalese football supporters detained in Morocco following incidents linked to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have regained their freedom.

Faye disclosed this in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) page on Saturday, stating that the fans would soon reunite with their families following a royal pardon granted by Morocco’s King Mohammed VI on the occasion of Eid al-Adha.

Our compatriots who were detained in Morocco following the incidents that occurred on the sidelines of the Africa Cup of Nations are now free.

“They will soon be reunited with their loved ones, thanks to the Royal Grace that His Majesty King Mohammed VI has graciously granted them on the occasion of Eid al-Adha,” he said.

The Senegalese president expressed appreciation to the Moroccan monarch for what he described as a gesture of clemency and humanity.

He also said the decision reflected the longstanding brotherhood between Senegal and Morocco, adding that the gesture further strengthened ties between both countries.

Faye extended Eid al-Adha greetings to King Mohammed VI and the people of Morocco.

I extend to His Majesty my most sincere thanks for this decision, imbued with clemency and humanity. 

“Senegal and Morocco cherish an ancient brotherhood, which this gesture, once again, comes to honor. Eid Mubarak to His Majesty the King and to all the Moroccan people,” he added.
