Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has said the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats in Nigeria is not solely the responsibility of the military, stressing that citizens must also play an active role in supporting security agencies.
In a message shared on his X account on Monday, the President praised members of the armed forces and other security agencies for their efforts in safeguarding the country, describing them as a critical shield between criminals and innocent citizens.
I commend all our patriotic front-line soldiers in the fight against terrorism in all forms.
You stand as a shield between innocent citizens and those who seek to destroy the peace, safety, and dignity of our communities.

Tinubu noted that security personnel continue to operate under difficult conditions across forests, waterways, highways and other remote locations, often at great personal risk.
“This fight has not been easy. It has come with pain, pressure, and sacrifice. But your courage has remained firm. Your service is acknowledged. Your sacrifice is honoured. Your country does not take you for granted,” he stated.
He said their courage and sacrifice had not gone unnoticed, adding that the nation remains deeply appreciative of their service and commitment.
The President also extended his commendation to personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, intelligence agencies and local security agencies involved in efforts to keep the country safe.
He further recognised the sacrifices made by the families of security personnel, noting that long deployments and the uncertainties of service often place emotional burdens on loved ones.
Tinubu paid tribute to officers and men who lost their lives in the line of duty, describing their contributions as crucial to the protection of communities and the preservation of national stability.

“I also acknowledge the families behind the uniform. Many of you have endured long absences, anxious nights, and the emotional cost of duty. Nigeria remembers that sacrifice, too,” he said.
“We honour those who have paid the supreme price in defence of our country. Their names may not always trend, but their courage lives on in rescued communities, protected families, and the survival of the nation they served,” he added.
The President stressed that the fight against insecurity should not be left to security agencies alone, urging Nigerians to support ongoing operations by providing credible and timely information to relevant authorities.
According to him, defeating terrorism, banditry and other forms of violent crime requires collective responsibility and cooperation between citizens and security agencies.
“The fight against terror is not only a military operation. It is a national duty. Citizens must support our security forces by providing timely, useful information. When you see something, say something. When you know something, report it,” he said.
Tinubu also reaffirmed his administration’s determination to confront insecurity, insisting that the country would not allow terrorists, kidnappers, bandits or violent extremists to define its future or undermine its values.
He concluded by expressing gratitude to security personnel for their service and vigilance, while praying for their safety as they continue to defend the nation.
