Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has assured the Niger State Government that the Police Force will thoroughly investigate the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Disu gave the assurance during a condolence visit to Governor Umaru Bago at the Government House in Minna following the incident.

He said the police would work with the NSCDC and the Niger State Government to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and ensure a successful investigation.

He said investigators had taken control of the scene to preserve evidence and prevent any interference with the investigation.

Disu also urged residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, assuring them that due process would be followed.

In response, Governor Bago commended the IGP for visiting the state and appreciated the police and other security agencies for their efforts in managing the situation.

Bago also announced that the Niger State Government had suspended mining activities across the state pending the outcome of the investigation.

He pledged to provide the police and other security agencies with relevant information in the government’s possession to support the investigation and ensure a comprehensive outcome.
