A Las Vegas jury on Monday found former gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis guilty of murder in the 1996 killing of hip-hop star Tupac Shakur, ending a nearly three-decade investigation into the rapper’s death.
Davis, 63, was convicted on a single count of murder with a deadly weapon in Nevada’s Clark County. He had pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Prosecutors accused Davis of orchestrating the drive-by shooting that killed Shakur, who was 25 at the time, as retaliation for an earlier confrontation involving Davis’ nephew.
Police had long considered Davis a person of interest but lacked sufficient evidence to charge him. The case gained momentum after Davis publicly discussed the killing in media interviews and a memoir, while recordings of his private conversations with investigators were also presented as evidence during the trial.
The trial, which began on August 17, featured hours of recorded conversations in which Davis described his anger after Shakur and his associates allegedly assaulted his nephew at a Las Vegas casino on September 7, 1996.
Davis told investigators that he and three other men, including his nephew, later drove around Las Vegas in a white Cadillac looking for Shakur and Death Row Records executive Marion “Suge” Knight.
According to his account, Davis passed a firearm to someone in the back seat before the group located Shakur and Knight in another vehicle. One of the passengers then opened fire.
Prosecutors have never identified the alleged shooter. The three other men who were in the Cadillac have since died.
Under Nevada law, Davis could be convicted of murder even though prosecutors did not allege that he personally fired the shots.
Davis was a leader of the Southside Compton Crips, a Los Angeles-area street gang that had a longstanding rivalry with the Mob Piru gang, which was associated with Shakur and his Death Row Records label.
Shakur was shot multiple times in a drive-by attack in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996, and died six days later.
His killing became one of the defining tragedies in hip-hop history.
