North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently directed the testing of strategic cruise and anti-warship missiles launched from a naval destroyer, according to state media reports released Monday.

These tests, which took place on Sunday, are part of a continuous series of weapon demonstrations by the nuclear-armed state as it seeks to modernise its military hardware.

Reports from the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) indicated that two strategic cruise missiles remained airborne for over two hours, while the anti-warship missiles recorded a flight time of approximately 33 minutes.

The weapons were launched from the Choe Hyon, one of the nation’s new 5,000-tonne destroyers, and reportedly struck their designated targets in the Yellow Sea with high precision.

During the proceedings, Kim was also updated on the progress of two additional destroyers currently under construction.

He emphasised that strengthening the country’s nuclear deterrent remains the administration’s “most important priority task,” signalling a continued commitment to expanding North Korea’s naval and nuclear capabilities.
