President Denis Sassou Nguesso has reappointed Anatole Collinet Makosso as prime minister of the Republic of Congo, a decree announced on Thursday.
The appointment follows the recent resignation of Makosso and his cabinet, which was a standard constitutional step after Nguesso’s swearing-in for a new term.
Makosso will now put together a new government team and present his list to the president.
Nguesso secured another five years in office after winning the March 15 presidential election. Makosso has held the position of prime minister since May 2021.

Observers believe the decision to keep Makosso points to a desire for political stability and recognition of his ability to balance strategic goals with effective day-to-day governance.
Local reports indicate that Makosso has led key structural reforms and contributed to efforts to revive the nation’s economy.
The Republic of the Congo has a population of about 6 million and is one of Africa’s leading oil producers. The World Bank says oil makes up roughly 80 percent of the country’s export earnings.
Nguesso has promised that his new term will focus on boosting the economy through mechanised agriculture and industrial development, with the goal of creating jobs, especially for young people.
