The Mexican government announced on Wednesday that it has launched formal negotiations with the United States to review and revise the U.S.-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement (USMCA).

The Mexican Ministry of Economy confirmed that Canada is also participating in this first official round of preparatory talks, which aim to address the future of the tripartite trade pact.

However, aggressive tariff threats from U.S. President Donald Trump heavily overshadow the launch of these high-stakes negotiations.

The regional partners are opening the review under the treaty’s mandatory sunset clause, which requires all three nations to formally evaluate and renew the agreement.
