Vehicular and pedestrian movement has been disrupted in Kwara State following the collapse of the popular Moro Bridge, a key link between the state and neighbouring Oyo State.
The bridge collapsed on Thursday, cutting off a major transport route used for the movement of goods and services and affecting economic activities in the area.
Confirming the incident, the Kwara State Ministry of Works said the structure collapsed overnight after it was impacted by a heavy-duty truck.
In a statement signed by the ministry’s Press Secretary, Olajide Moyo Abolarin, the government said traffic had been immediately diverted and personnel deployed to manage movement along the affected areas.
The ministry also said efforts were ongoing to ease congestion, noting that alternative routes were being coordinated in collaboration with federal authorities.
It directed traffic officials to work with transport unions and commuters to ensure orderly movement while emergency repairs begin on the damaged structure.
The government appealed for calm from road users as intervention measures are rolled out. It further assured that work on a new Moro Bridge project nearby is being fast-tracked to provide a long-term solution to the disruption.
