Moroccan lawyers announced on Friday that they will prolong their ongoing strike against sweeping government judicial reforms, leaving numerous litigants without court representation.

Members of Morocco’s Association of Bar Associations originally halted work on June 15 to oppose legislation championed by Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi.

Following a marathon meeting on Thursday, the association confirmed a complete suspension of professional services until parliament repeals the law, arguing the measure severely undermines defence immunity and professional autonomy.

The dispute stems from broad reform legislation that overhauls lawyer training, internal governance, and financial management across the legal sector.

Tensions previously flared in February during intermittent strikes and national protests, briefly easing when the government formed a joint commission to review the proposals.

However, opposition erupted anew after a parliamentary committee approved the text in mid-May, leading to the law’s final passage and triggering the current prolonged legal freeze.
