A 55-year-old motorist has escaped without injury after a moving train collided with his Honda car at the PWD railway crossing in Lagos on Thursday evening.

The train was travelling towards Agege when it struck the Honda, with registration number EKY 902 JT. The collision severely damaged the car, leaving it beyond repair. However, no casualties were recorded, as the driver escaped unharmed.

Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) operatives and security personnel responded to the incident. They rescued the driver and removed the wrecked vehicle from the railway track.

According to Vanguard, an eyewitness said the swift response cleared the obstruction and allowed the train to continue its journey towards Agege. Despite removing the wreckage, the incident caused heavy traffic around the PWD area, slowing movement along the corridor.

LASTMA later handed the damaged vehicle over to security personnel for further investigation into the cause of the collision. The agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended LASTMA operatives and security personnel for their prompt and coordinated response. He said their efforts helped prevent a potentially worse outcome.

Bakare-Oki stressed that cooperation among agencies and a quick response to emergencies were vital to managing transport incidents, especially those involving trains. He also urged motorists to obey railway safety rules and exercise caution at railway crossings. Drivers, he said, should never attempt to cross when a train is approaching or already in motion.

“Reckless disregard for railway safety protocols could precipitate devastating and irreversible consequences,” he warned.

The LASTMA boss appealed to motorists and other road users to remain vigilant and comply with traffic and railway safety regulations, stressing that protecting human life must remain the priority.
