Ethiopia has secured royal amnesty for 1,971 of its nationals in Saudi Arabia, with repatriation efforts now underway, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Monday.
The ministry, in a statement, said it remained closely engaged with Saudi authorities regarding matters affecting Ethiopian nationals in the Kingdom, including individuals facing legal proceedings and judicial measures.
“The Government of Ethiopia attaches the highest importance to the welfare, protection, and consular assistance of its citizens abroad,” the statement read.

The ministry said sustained diplomatic and consular efforts had yielded positive humanitarian outcomes, with 1,971 Ethiopian nationals benefiting from royal amnesties granted by Saudi authorities.
“To date, a total of 1,971 Ethiopian nationals have benefited from royal amnesties granted by the Saudi authorities and the Government of Ethiopia has begun facilitating their repatriation,” the ministry said.
It described the development as a reflection of “constructive cooperation and longstanding relations” between the two countries on consular and humanitarian matters.
The ministry said it would continue to employ all available diplomatic and consular channels to safeguard the interests, rights and welfare of Ethiopian nationals abroad and maintain engagement with Saudi authorities on remaining matters of concern.
