Nigerian saxophonist Adekeye Gbemileke Samuel, popularly known as G-Effect, is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the longest non-stop saxophone marathon, aiming to play for 40 hours straight at a hotel in Ikeja.

The marathon began at 10 am on Wednesday at the Q Airport Hotel Olumo Hall and is scheduled to run until 10 am on Thursday, May 28, 2026. The current world record stands at 33 hours.

“He’s been here since morning…He’s meant to go beyond 40 hours, and that is exactly what we are witnessing here today,” News Central TV reporter Israel Eferobor said from the scene.

Samuel, who was already heading into his fifth hour on stage,  told reporters he had been preparing for the moment “all his life” and drew inspiration from his love for children, a fitting motivation on the day set aside to celebrate Nigerian children.

“He’s been doing this for quite some time now. He says he’s also been inspired by his love for children,” Eferobor said.

“If you take a look around, there are some supporters who have come here as well to spur him on his attempt to break the Guinness World Record.”

The saxophonist is permitted short breaks of about five minutes between sessions. The current Guinness World Record for the Longest Marathon Playing the Saxophone is held by Elvis Nunes Sousa of Portugal, who achieved the feat by playing continuously for 33 hours in September 2025 in Funchal, Madeira.

Before Sousa’s achievement, the record was held by Mysore Sainatha Subbalaxmi of India, who completed a 26-hour and 23-minute saxophone marathon in 2023.
