Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has assured families of pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area that the state government, in collaboration with security agencies, is intensifying efforts to secure their safe release.

Makinde gave the assurance on Saturday during a visit to the Ahoro-Esiele community, where he met with relatives of the victims, traditional leaders and residents at L.A. Basic School.

The visit came following rising tension and concern over the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers, which has sparked protests and renewed debate on security in schools across the state.

In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, the governor said he had engaged directly with the affected families and reaffirmed t

“Today we visited Oriire LGA to meet with the family members of children and teachers that were abducted about two weeks ago. After listening to them, I gave them the assurance that we are doing everything humanly possible to ensure the safe return of those who were kidnapped, and that by the grace of God, they will be reunited with their loved ones very soon,” the governor said.

The abduction occurred on May 15 when armed men invaded Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School in Esiele, taking away 45 pupils and teachers.

Days after the incident, one of the abducted teachers, said to be a Mathematics instructor, was reportedly killed by the kidnappers, further heightening public concern.

The incident has drawn condemnation from both the state and federal governments, with assurances that security agencies are working to rescue the victims and apprehend those responsible.

Public anger over the incident later led to a peaceful protest in Ogbomoso, where teachers suspended classroom activities and marched to the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) office to demand urgent government action.

The demonstrators also called for improved security measures in schools across the state to prevent further attacks on students and education workers.
