Plateau State is increasingly becoming unsafe, with attacks on both rural and urban communities forcing people to live in constant fear of the next attack, Amnesty International has said.

The human rights organisation made the statement on Friday following a midnight attack on Ngbra-Zongo village in Bassa Local Government Area that left 12 people dead.

“Plateau state is increasingly becoming unsafe, with attacks on both rural and urban communities forcing people to be living in constant fear of the next attack,” Amnesty said.

Amnesty condemned the killing of 12 people in what it described as a “horrific midnight attack” on Ngbra-Zongo village.

“Ten people are now receiving treatment for gunshot wounds. The victims include pregnant women and children. Entire families were locked up in rooms of their homes and slaughtered one by one,” the statement read.

The rights group blamed President Bola Tinubu’s government for failing to address widespread insecurity.

“The utter failure of President Bola Tinubu’s government to address widespread insecurity is costing lives. While the government of Tinubu is claiming to be tackling the endemic security crisis, the death toll tells a different story,” Amnesty said.

Amnesty said Nigerian authorities have failed the people of Plateau State repeatedly.

“Frequent attacks by gunmen have deprived thousands of people of their rights to life, physical integrity, liberty, freedom of movement and access to livelihoods,” the statement read.

The organisation called on the government to end the attacks, ensure suspected perpetrators are brought to justice, and give victims and survivors adequate reparation.
