The Lagos State Police Command has arrested three suspected members of the Aiye Confraternity during an intelligence-led operation in Imota, recovering firearms, ammunition and other weapons allegedly linked to the group.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, said operatives arrested 37-year-old Jelili Adeyemo, identified as the group’s alleged armourer, alongside 42-year-old Bisoye Adewale and 60-year-old John Okeafo.
Police operatives recovered one Beretta pistol, one locally made pistol, seven Dane guns, 10 live cartridges, seven expended cartridges, one stun gun, two handcuffs and four cutlasses during the operation.
“The operation followed credible information from members of the public on the activities of suspected cultists in Imota.
Acting on the credible intelligence, operatives of the Command stormed the location and arrested Jelili Adeyemo, alleged to be the armourer of the group; Bisoye Adewale; and John Okeafo,” the statement read.
Adebisi revealed that preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects belonged to the Aiye Confraternity.
It further alleged that the recovered Beretta pistol belonged to a wanted cultist known by the alias “Mayibone”, who remains at large.
The command disclosed that the suspects had been arraigned and remanded, while efforts were ongoing to arrest other fleeing members of the group and recover additional weapons.
Commenting on the operation, the Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, reiterated the command’s resolve to combat cult-related violence and other crimes across Lagos.
He urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to support police operations.
The police also encouraged members of the public to report suspicious persons, vehicles and activities through the nearest police station or the command’s emergency lines.
