Portugal coach Roberto Martinez has defended Cristiano Ronaldo following criticism of the veteran forward’s performance in the team’s World Cup opener, describing the captain as a role model for both teammates and fans.

Portugal, regarded as one of the contenders for the title in North America, was held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo in their opening Group K match, with Ronaldo attracting scrutiny after a subdued display.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s clash against World Cup debutants Uzbekistan in Houston, Martinez praised the 41-year-old’s professionalism and dedication.

The Portuguese coach said Ronaldo remained an outstanding example of focus and discipline, citing his commitment to training, preparation and recovery.

According to Martinez, the striker’s desire to keep improving, even after six World Cup appearances, makes him a model figure within the squad.

“He’s a good example for us, for all of us.

“It is the sixth time he plays a World Cup, and he is a player who’s been defending and playing for his country for a long time.

“So he really wants to keep on improving, to contribute to the team, and he’s really a role model for our team,” he said.

Martinez, however, declined to confirm whether Ronaldo would start against Uzbekistan, saying he had yet to communicate his team selection to the players.

The former Belgium manager said the disappointment of dropping points against DR Congo had strengthened the team’s resolve ahead of their second group match.

He noted that the frustration felt after the opening game had become a motivating factor, adding that the squad had responded positively and remained united in its preparations.

“The feeling of frustration that we all had as a team, the feeling of disappointment after the game, probably that’s the best starting point to prepare for the next game,” said Martinez.

“We are more united, we are stronger, and we work very hard.

“And also the players have a wonderful attitude.”

Martinez also dismissed concerns over criticism directed at the team following the draw, describing scrutiny and pressure as a normal part of competing at a World Cup.

“We are playing a World Cup, so of course we have lots of noise and tension,” he said.

Portugal will be aiming for their first victory of the tournament when they face Uzbekistan, who are making their maiden appearance at the global showpiece.
