The President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has formally declared the Ondo South senatorial seat vacant.

The declaration follows the recent appointment of Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN).

Announcing the decision during Tuesday’s plenary, the Senate President stated that the vacancy takes immediate effect in accordance with constitutional provisions.

Senator Jimoh Ibrahim was officially accredited as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, presenting his Letter of Credence to UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

He also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a by-election within 30 days to fill the vacant seat.

Under the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Senate is required to notify the electoral body of any vacancy in its membership to enable the process of organising a fresh election.

Before his diplomatic appointment, Ibrahim, a businessman and politician, represented the Ondo South senatorial district under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
