President Bola Tinubu on Friday announced the revitalisation and renaming of the Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.

The president made the announcement during his Democracy Day address to the nation.

He said the move honoured the late general for his vision of national partnership, describing him as one of the architects of modern democratic Nigeria.

“Among the architects of modern democratic Nigeria, we honour General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua for his vision of national partnership,” Tinubu said.

The newly renamed institution will specialise in geological sciences and engineering technology, according to the president’s announcement.

The institute, which has now been completed, will undergo revitalisation as part of the transition to a full university.

“In recognition of his contributions, the Federal Government has approved the revitalisation and renaming of the completed Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna, as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.” Tinubu added.

Tinubu also used his Democracy Day address to announce national awards for dozens of Nigerians who suffered persecution during the struggle for democracy.

He also pushed for financial autonomy for Nigeria’s 774 local government councils and issued an ultimatum to bandits and kidnappers to surrender or face the full force of the state.

The president acknowledged that the mood of this year’s celebration was dampened by the abduction of schoolchildren but expressed hope for their safe return.

“Though this year’s mood is dampened by the abduction of our children, we remain hopeful for their safe return,” he said.
