United States President Donald Trump has nominated Hung Cao to serve as the permanent US Secretary of the Navy, saying he believes Cao is the right person to lead the Navy and Marine Corps.
Trump announced the nomination on Tuesday, praising Cao as a patriot and urging the US Senate to confirm him without delay.
Cao has been serving as acting Navy Secretary since the departure of John Phelan, whose exit was announced by the Pentagon in April without an explanation for the sudden change.
Trump’s return to office in January has been followed by significant changes among senior military officials.
Army Secretary Dan Driscoll also submitted his resignation on Monday, following reports of tensions with Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Cao was born in Vietnam and moved to the United States as a refugee in 1975. He retired from the Navy in 2021.
He later entered politics as a Republican and ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Congress from Virginia in 2022.
