US Returns $2.5m to Gambia from Jammeh Asset Sale

The United States is returning $2.5 million to The Gambia from the sale of a US mansion bought with illicit funds by former leader Yahya Jammeh and his wife, the Justice Department said Friday.

The former Gambian dictator and his wife used illicit funds and state resources to purchase the luxury property in the Washington suburb of Potomac.

Federal officials confirmed that the repatriated money will directly compensate victims of Jammeh’s oppressive regime.

Jammeh ruled The Gambia from 1994 until 2017, using his two decades in power to commit widespread human rights abuses and siphon public funds for personal wealth.

Regional military intervention forced Jammeh into exile in Equatorial Guinea following his 2016 election loss, and the U.S. government has barred his family from entering the country since 2018.
