The United States Embassy in Mali has advised American citizens to limit all unnecessary travel in the capital, Bamako, through the weekend and remain vigilant over heightened security concerns.

In a security alert issued on May 29, the embassy urged U.S. citizens to follow embassy notifications and local news updates, avoid areas where security operations may be underway, and exercise increased caution throughout the country.

The embassy advised Americans to avoid public demonstrations, refrain from attempting to drive through roadblocks, and stay away from large gatherings or protests. It also encouraged citizens to keep a low profile, remain aware of their surroundings, maintain reliable means of communication, and ensure travel documents are up to date and easily accessible.

In addition, the embassy urged U.S. citizens to review their personal security plans, prepare contingency plans, and gather supplies that may be needed to shelter in a secure location if necessary.

The alert did not specify the reason for the heightened security advisory.

However, Mali has faced persistent security challenges in recent years, including attacks by armed groups, political instability, and periodic unrest.

Since military officers seized power in coups in 2020 and 2021, the West African nation has experienced significant political changes and continued security concerns.

Armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State have carried out attacks in parts of the country, while authorities have periodically conducted security operations in response to perceived threats.

Foreign embassies and international organisations frequently issue security advisories in Mali, particularly when there are concerns about demonstrations, unrest, or potential security incidents.

The U.S. Embassy said American citizens should continue to exercise vigilance and monitor official updates as the situation develops.
