West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes has joined Tottenham Hotspur for a club-record fee of £85 million ($113.4 million) following the Hammers’ relegation from the Premier League.
The 21-year-old Portuguese international moves across London to spearhead manager Roberto de Zerbi’s squad rebuild after Spurs narrowly avoided the drop last season.
The massive transfer easily eclipses Tottenham’s previous record signing, the £52 million they spent on Dutch attacker Xavi Simons last August.
Fernandes, who chose Spurs over interest from Manchester United, revealed that De Zerbi played a crucial role in his decision.
The midfielder stated that he and the Italian manager share the same football philosophy of attacking with fight and high energy.
De Zerbi highly praised Fernandes’s tactical intelligence, Premier League experience, and composure under pressure, expressing immense excitement to guide his continued development.

The young midfielder originally arrived in England with Southampton from the Sporting Lisbon academy, scoring five goals in 72 Premier League appearances during his time in the country.
Although Fernandes made his senior international debut for Portugal in April, he missed out on Roberto Martinez’s World Cup squad.
He joins a major summer overhaul at Tottenham alongside Sandro Tonali, Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson, and Jan Paul van Hecke ahead of their season opener against Brentford on August 22.
