The Moroccan government has unveiled a $1.4 billion initiative aimed at tackling unemployment, as announced by government spokesperson Mustafa Baitas following a cabinet meeting in Rabat.
The plan, presented by Minister of Economic Inclusiveness Younes Sekkouri, seeks to address evolving labour market challenges, particularly those linked to climate change, which has become a pressing concern.
According to Baitas, the government developed the strategy after extensive consultations with key economic and social stakeholders, including the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises.
The initiative focuses on bolstering small and medium-sized enterprises to generate more job opportunities.
It also aims to restructure and expand active employment programmes, offering support not only to university graduates but also to job seekers without higher education qualifications through a newly devised government framework.
The announcement comes in response to a recent report by the High Commission for Planning, which revealed a slight rise in Morocco’s unemployment rate, increasing from 13 per cent in 2023 to 13.3 per cent in 2024.
