Libya recorded its highest oil production level in more than a decade in 2025, with output rising to 1.37 million barrels per day, Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah said on Saturday.

Dbeibah disclosed the figure while speaking at the opening of the Libya Energy and Economy Summit (LEES) 2026 in Tripoli.

He said that production resumed last year at several oil fields across the country, including Iravn, Mutahandush, al-Khayr, Hamada 47 and Sinawan, contributing to the surge.

The prime minister also announced that Libya launched its first oil and natural gas exploration licensing round in 17 years in 2025, drawing strong interest from international energy firms.

He added that the outcome of the tender process is expected to be unveiled in the second week of February.

Expanding on upcoming developments, Dbeibah noted that new agreements are set to be signed during the summit to develop two offshore natural gas fields.

Libya, a member of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), is among the world’s top 10 nations in proven oil reserves, estimated at 48.4 billion barrels, according to OPEC figures. Its proven natural gas reserves stand at about 1.5 trillion cubic metres.

Beyond hydrocarbons, Libya also has significant renewable energy potential, given its vast landmass and high levels of solar exposure.
