Nearly 20 years after The Devil Wears Prada became a pop culture hit, the film’s original stars reunited in New York on Monday for the world premiere of the sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2.

Meryl Streep, reprising her role as formidable magazine editor Miranda Priestly, appeared on the red carpet alongside Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.

Speaking at the event, Streep said returning to the character felt overdue, while Tucci said stepping back into the role came naturally.

The sequel follows Andy Sachs, played by Hathaway, now an established figure at Runway Magazine, where Miranda is grappling with the decline of print media. Priestly is forced into a power struggle with her former assistant Emily Charlton, played by Blunt, who has become a top executive controlling the advertising revenue the magazine now depends on.

Kenneth Branagh joins the cast as Miranda’s latest husband, while Simone Ashley and Lucy Liu are among the new additions.

Fashion took centre stage at the premiere, with Streep wearing Givenchy, while Hathaway and Blunt arrived in Louis Vuitton and Schiaparelli respectively.

Streep also disclosed that outfits, jewellery, bags and shoes featured in the film would be auctioned in support of the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Hathaway and Blunt credited fans for keeping demand for a sequel alive over the years, saying audience support made the project possible.

Among other notable guests was former Vogue editor Anna Wintour, widely regarded as the inspiration for Streep’s character.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is scheduled for cinema release on May 1.
