Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown has been handed a suspended eight-month sentence, avoiding jail time, for what prosecutors described as a “vicious and unprovoked” attack at a London nightclub in 2023.

Sentencing Brown at Southwark Crown Court, Judge Tony Baumgartner warned the singer that his fame did not exempt him from the law.

“I take account of your employment and long-established career in music. Your fame, commercial success and professional standing do not entitle you to special treatment. The law applies equally to everyone,” the judge said.

Brown pleaded guilty in July to one count of affray for attacking music producer Abraham Diaw with a tequila bottle at the Tape London nightclub in February 2023.

His co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, a Florida rapper also known as HoodyBaby, also pleaded guilty and received a four-month sentence, suspended for 12 months.

The Crown Prosecution Service said the duo attacked Diaw, with Brown hitting him twice on the head with a tequila bottle while Akinlolu punched him.

“They continued their assault whilst the victim attempted to flee through the club,” the CPS said.

“The victim was kicked while he was seated defenseless on the floor.”

Diaw was treated in hospital for head and knee injuries, and a warrant was issued for the pair’s arrest after they left the UK.

Brown was arrested in May 2025 upon returning to the UK for his world tour.

“This was a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub where Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon to strike the victim’s head twice,” said Claire Campbell, a senior prosecutor at CPS London South.

Charges of assault, grievous bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon were dropped after the pair denied them.
