The outbound lane of the Eko Bridge heading toward Lagos Island will be closed on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, for safety investigations and repairs.

This was announced in a statement issued on Sunday and signed by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi.

The commissioner noted that the inward Lagos Island carriageway will remain open to motorists.

“In view of the closure between Apongbon and Ijora Olopa, members of the motoring public are advised to use the Third Mainland Bridge to access their desired destinations.
The inward Lagos Island carriageway will remain open to motorists. Adequate traffic and security personnel will be deployed along alternative routes to guide motorists and ensure smooth traffic flow.”

The Nigerian Government had ordered the immediate closure of a section of the Eko Bridge as it formally commenced the construction of a new Carter Bridge in Lagos, citing urgent structural concerns.

The Eko Bridge is one of the major road bridges in Lagos and a key part of the city’s transport network.

It connects the Lagos Island area around Iddo and Carter Bridge axis to the mainland, running over the Lagos Lagoon.

The bridge helps move heavy traffic between commercial hubs on the island, such as the Lagos Island Central Business District, and mainland areas, including Surulere, Apapa, and Mushin.

The Eko Bridge has, however, faced challenges common to Lagos infrastructure, such as heavy traffic congestion, ageing structure, and periodic maintenance needs due to constant use.
