Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz has said he will cut his salary and those of his cabinet ministers by half as the country faces growing political and economic unrest.
Paz made the announcement on Monday while speaking at an event in Sucre, Bolivia’s constitutional capital.
The President said the decision shows the government’s commitment to the country as protests and roadblocks demanding his resignation continue.
“The pay cuts demonstrated the government’s ‘commitment to the country,’” he said.
Bolivia is currently in its fourth week of protests and social unrest, with demonstrators blocking roads and disrupting supply chains in cities such as La Paz and El Alto.
The unrest has led to shortages of food, fuel, and medicine, affecting markets, hospitals, and fuel stations. Protesters are calling on Paz’s government to reverse austerity measures and address rising living costs.
Paz, who took office in November, inherited an economy already facing serious challenges. He has defended his government’s spending cuts and fuel subsidy reductions, saying they are necessary to stabilise public finances.
