England have reached the World Cup semi-finals after English professional footballer Jude Bellingham scored twice to secure a 2-1 extra-time comeback win over Norway on Saturday.
Norway took a surprise lead in their first-ever World Cup quarter-final when Andreas Schjelderup fired past England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the first half.
Bellingham then rescued England once again, producing a brilliant finish just before the break to level the game.
The Real Madrid midfielder had also scored twice in England’s 3-2 win over Mexico in the last 16.
The match remained tense after Norway thought they had taken the lead again in the second half, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review for a foul by Erling Haaland.
With both teams struggling in the intense Miami heat, the game went into extra time before Bellingham delivered the decisive moment.
He capitalised on a mistake by Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland to score his sixth goal of the tournament and send England into the last four.
England will now face either Argentina or Switzerland on Wednesday for a place in the World Cup final.
England manager Thomas Tuchel admitted his team did not produce their best performance despite the victory.
“We are in the last four. It’s amazing but not happy with the performance, in every sense,
“We made life difficult for ourselves in the way we played — sloppy, a lot of technical mistakes, not fast enough. We were lucky today,” Tuchel said.
The result ended Norway’s historic World Cup run, while Haaland’s impressive scoring streak for his country also came to an end.
The striker, who had scored in 14 consecutive competitive matches for Norway, was substituted during extra time.
The game was played in difficult conditions, with temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius and heavy humidity affecting both teams.
Norway started strongly and had chances to extend their lead after Schjelderup’s opener, but England fought back through Bellingham’s equaliser.
In the second half, England made changes to strengthen their attack but struggled to control the game as Norway pushed for another goal.
Norway came close several times, including a shot that hit the bar, but England held on.
Bellingham’s late winner sealed another comeback victory for England, who have now overturned early deficits twice during this World Cup.
The Three Lions are now one step closer to reaching their first World Cup final since 1966.
