UN Warns of Ebola Spread in DR Congo Camps

The United Nations (UN) warned on Monday that Ebola risks spreading rapidly through overcrowded displacement camps in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The UN humanitarian agency OCHA reported confirmed cases in at least 16 displacement sites across Ituri province, where over 270,000 displaced people live with limited access to basic services.

Health authorities have recorded 2,344 confirmed cases and 930 deaths in the DRC during this current outbreak, which has now spread across five provinces and into neighbouring Uganda.

Canada Bans Foreigners Travelling From Congo

The World Health Organisation (WHO) classifies this as the third-largest Ebola outbreak on record, noting that more than 460 patients have recovered while nearly 200 suspected cases remain under monitoring.

The UN and partner agencies are installing handwashing stations and leading community prevention efforts, but OCHA warned that humanitarian needs continue to outpace available funding.

The outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo species of Ebola, for which no approved vaccines or specific medical treatments currently exist.
