Six children were killed and four others were injured after a severe thunderstorm struck the Ganye Local Government Area of Adamawa State, police authorities said.
In a statement released on Monday, the spokesperson for the Adamawa Police Command, Suleiman Nguroje, said the incident happened on Sunday at about 4:00 pm in Dadiri-Tirigali village within the area during heavy rainfall.
According to the victims’ family members, they were harvesting groundnuts on their farm when they took shelter under a tree to escape the rain.
Moments later, lightning struck the tree, killing six of them instantly and injuring four others.
According to Nguroje, the command received an emergency report from the Ganye Divisional Headquarters on the natural disaster.
“The report said that lightning had struck nine persons who were working on a farm in the village.”
“On receipt of the report, personnel from the division were promptly deployed to the scene and, on reaching there, found the victims lying unconscious on the ground.
“Three of the victims later regained consciousness, while the remaining six were confirmed dead by medical personnel,” Nguroje said.
The deceased were identified as Abdulrahman Musa, Aliyu Sule Maunde, Jaafar Sule Maunde, Bilkisu Jibrin Maunde, Musa Ahmadu, and Auwalu Nuhu.
The injured are Nasiru Abubakar, Rilwanu Ahmadu, Saadatu Isa, and Hasiya Isa.
