Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Wednesday that they launched missile and drone strikes on United States bases in Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region, according to the Iranian state media.
In a statement carried by the state-run IRNA news agency, the Guards said the coordinated attack targeted US positions in Erbil, destroyed a maintenance centre and warehouses. It added that the strike also damaged the guidance system of a US surveillance aerostat.
Since the start of the Middle East war, the northern Kurdistan region, where US-led anti-jihadist coalition troops are deployed, has been a target for attacks carried out by Iran or pro-Iran Iraqi armed groups.
Iraqi Kurdish counterterrorism forces said ten drones carrying explosives were intercepted over Erbil province between 1:13 am and 3:31 am local time on Wednesday. It added that the drones were brought down without causing casualties.
An AFP journalist reported hearing explosions near Erbil airport, which hosts coalition troops.
Erbil has repeatedly been targeted by drone attacks in recent years and is also home to a major US consulate complex.
The Kurdistan region is also home to Iranian Kurdish opposition groups that have been targeted in previous missile and drone strikes attributed to Iran.
