A fire at a wedding in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s capital, Kinshasa, has killed at least 22 people, with several others injured.
The fire started Friday night and continued on Saturday at a building in Lingwala, northern Kinshasa.
The building’s narrow hallways became crowded as guests tried to escape the flames.
Several victims, both alive and dead, were taken to the roadside while attendees tried to help survivors.
Lingwala Mayor Norbert Mushinga told the Congolese Press Agency on Saturday that the provisional death toll was 22.
He warned that the number of deaths could rise further.
The exact cause of the fire remains unconfirmed.
“It is a tragedy,” Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Jacquemin Shabani said while visiting the scene Saturday morning.
Deadly fires are common in densely populated parts of Kinshasa, where urban development often lacks adequate fire services.
Local media reports that several fires have occurred in the city this year, particularly during the dry season.
