LASTMA Warns Against Skating On Highways

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has cautioned children, teenagers and young adults against using rolling skate shoes, wheeled footwear and similar recreational devices on public highways.

The warning was contained in a statement signed by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq.

The authority said the increasing use of footwear fitted with concealed or retractable wheels on roads designed for motorised traffic poses a serious safety concern, particularly when users glide alongside moving vehicles, cross carriageways or manoeuvre through traffic without adequate protection and adult supervision.

LASTMA noted that public highways are unpredictable environments where vehicles, motorcycles and pedestrians move simultaneously, making them unsuitable for recreational skating.

“Unlike designated recreational facilities, public highways are dynamic and highly unpredictable environments characterised by the simultaneous movement of vehicles, motorcycles, pedestrians and other road users,” the agency noted.

“The introduction of wheeled recreational devices into such spaces can significantly diminish a user’s ability to respond appropriately to sudden vehicular movements, creating circumstances capable of culminating in devastating collisions and life-altering injuries.”

It urged parents, guardians, schools and caregivers to discourage children and other vulnerable road users from skating on highways, expressways, bridges, service lanes and other areas open to vehicular traffic.

The authority advised users of wheeled footwear to restrict skating to designated recreational areas, private compounds, and other suitable locations, while using protective equipment such as helmets, knee pads, and elbow pads.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said road safety requires constant vigilance, discipline and respect for the risks associated with public roads.

He stressed that preserving human life should remain paramount, adding that no recreational activity justifies exposing individuals or other road users to unnecessary danger.

LASTMA also urged motorists to exercise greater caution around children and young people using wheeled footwear, particularly in residential areas, estates and school zones where vulnerable road users could suddenly enter traffic.

The authority asked members of the public to report dangerous traffic situations, road obstructions, crashes, breakdowns and other incidents requiring urgent intervention through its toll-free short code, 3367.

LASTMA reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and promoting safer and more orderly road use across Lagos State.
