Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney slammed the club’s squad as “babies” and “selfish” following a humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como and captain Bruno Fernandes’ public criticism of manager Michael Carrick.
Carrick’s struggling squad currently sits 13th in the Premier League ahead of Sunday’s clash against Bournemouth, leaving the manager fighting to keep his job as internal turmoil continues to rock the club.
The crisis deepened after Fernandes criticised Carrick’s tactics following Wednesday’s European defeat, arguing the team needed to play with more courage.

His comments followed defender Lisandro Martinez’s public criticism of the board’s transfer spending last week.
Rooney expressed complete disbelief over the team’s recent performance on The United Stand podcast, pointing the blame directly at the squad rather than his former teammate and friend Carrick.

“When Martinez came out, I said, ‘This is an absolute nightmare because it will rip the dressing room apart,” Rooney stated during the podcast interview.

“That was the start. We’ve seen it now with Bruno, and you’re going to see it with more players because these players don’t want to take responsibility. You can say whether Bruno was right or wrong in what he said, but you have to take responsibility on the pitch. You have to take responsibility as a group of players.”
Rooney accused the players of placing personal interest above the institution, warning that public finger-pointing damages the club’s culture. “These players, they’re selfish,” Rooney added.
“They don’t care about their teammates, don’t care about the manager, the staff or the fans; they care about themselves. If they’re not getting what’s right for them, they’re like babies and just throw their toys out of the pram and go and deflect the blame onto anyone else but themselves.”
